Pieced and quilted garments are millennia old.  But it was American women, free and
slave, whose imaginative response to necessity raised patchwork quilting to an art
form. Since the early 19th century, such American quilts have served many purposes—
as functional bed coverings, as expressions of solidarity with a cause, as means for
exhibiting one’s skills, and as a way to convey love of family and friends.  American
women created both the incredibly complex geometric patterns and the depictions of
everyday life that we associate with quilts today.

Storytelling has an even longer history. In America, telling and listening to stories was
about the only entertainment families had as they struggled to build a new country out
of wilderness. Over the past thirty years or so, more and more Americans have begun
to  rediscover the joy that a good story can bring. The National Storytelling Festival
and similar efforts are encouraging the growth and spread of this wonderful art form.

Storybook Quilts meld both of these very American traditions.  As quilt lovers and quilt
makers for years, we know the joys of both giving and receiving quilts and appreciate
the comfort they provide in happy times and in sad. We also love a good story--one
that is simple, exciting, imaginative and has a happy ending.  We believe your and your
little one will enjoy the love and closeness that the Storybook Quilt experience brings.
